Consider These Kits If You Have a Dog
If you own a dog, you might want to explore these at-home DNA test kits. Although I haven’t personally tried them for dogs, they are well-regarded options available from Basepaws and Wisdom Panel, both of which I have previously tested for my cats.
Some suggested products include:
- Basepaws Dog DNA Test
- Wisdom Panel’s Breed Discovery Dog DNA Kit
- Wisdom Panel’s Premium Dog DNA Kit
- Wisdom Panel’s Essential Dog DNA Kit
How Does a DNA Testing Kit Work?
DNA tests for pets require collecting cells via a cheek swab, which is mailed to the lab for analysis. Results can take up to five weeks. The lab compares the DNA sample to a breed and genetic health database using SNP arrays, identifying ancestry, traits, and potential health risks. Comparisons to specific Breeds’ SNP patterns allow for these insights.
Though informative, test results should not be considered definitive. Veterinarian Amanda Chambers advises owners to consult with their vet if any concerns arise from DNA test results.
Limitations of At-Home DNA Test Kits
After discussing with Jamie Richardson from Small Door Veterinary, notable limitations include:
- Results vary by genetic database size/diversity
- Kits test known markers—not full genomes
- Less developed feline data
- Potential misinterpretation leading to undue worry
How Accurate Is At-Home DNA Testing?
According to Wisdom Panel, their breed results are over 99% accurate for dogs. Disparities in results often stem from differing sample sizes and breed metrics between companies. Unlike dogs, identifying cat breeds through DNA is more challenging, as most cats do not belong to a recognized breed.
Breed identification through these tests is generally more reliable for dogs due to their defined genetic lineage.
Ancestry Results
The disparity in test results is significant due to sample pool comparisons. For instance, when testing my cat Clover, disparities between breed ancestries were evident. This issue is less pronounced with mixed-breed pets, as demonstrated by my other cat, Basil.
Health Results
Wisdom Panel examines 49 genetic health indicators, testing for common conditions. They also
