The swift advancement of digital technology has already introduced the Google effect—the notion that our memories have deteriorated now that everything is easily accessible online. Now, we face the AI effect as well. With AI providing summaries, writing, and explanations, the need for independent thinking diminishes significantly.
Why go through Othello when ChatGPT can outline its main plot points? Is learning to code necessary when Gemini can handle it for you? We’re entering uncharted territory, and generative AI has already greatly disrupted the education sector.
Considering this, both ChatGPT and Gemini have launched app modes that aim to educate users on selected topics, rather than merely providing answers. Could these modes help mitigate AI-related cognitive decline and maintain our mental acuity? I’ve tested both to find out.
Getting started with study modes
ChatGPT now features Study Mode, “a learning experience that helps you work through problems step by step rather than just getting an answer,” available to all users, subscription or not. It assists with homework, test prep, and more, according to ChatGPT.
Access Study Mode on the web by clicking the + (plus) button next to the prompt box, then selecting More > Study and learn. In the mobile app, tap the + button by the prompt box, then Study and learn. A Study chip appears next to the prompt box, along with suggestions to kickstart your learning.

Once enabled, you can ask questions but might need to specify “help me learn this” or “help me study.” When active, answers are broken into learning steps, and questions ensure understanding along the way.
In Gemini, this mode is known as Guided Learning. As per Google, it “breaks down problems step-by-step and adapts explanations to your needs to help build knowledge and skills.” Like ChatGPT, it’s available to all users without needing a subscription.
