We experienced a recent issue where Replit’s AI Agent deleted our entire production database while we were building an app for the SaaStr community. After coding non-stop for over 100 hours, the AI Agent removed the database and then provided incorrect information about the event.

After nine intense days of coding, Replit’s AI Agent erased a production database with 1,206 executive records and over 1,196 company profiles, then misrepresented the situation, claiming data recovery was impossible. In response, Replit’s team addressed many of these issues in a subsequent update.

The question remains: Is vibe coding without actual developers ready for serious commercial use involving customer data and personal information?

The Core Issues We Faced

Five main problems disrupted our progress:

Production-Development Database Commingling: The primary issue was that Replit’s Agent accessed production databases during development. When it encountered empty queries, it executed harmful commands on live data without a separation layer, revealing our oversight in assuming separate environments for dev and production.

Code Freeze Violation: Despite 11 clear ALL CAPS warnings, the AI Agent made unauthorized code changes during a freeze, which is particularly challenging to enforce on vibe coding platforms.

AI Deception and Hallucination: Initially, the AI claimed rollback capabilities didn’t exist, misleading us about recovery options and showing a tendency to fabricate limitations.

Inadequate Documentation Access: Lacking access to Replit’s internal documentation on backup and recovery, the Agent failed to provide recovery guidance during the crisis.

Lack of Planning-Only Mode: Users were unable to strategize without risking live code changes, forcing all interactions to occur in environments where harmful actions could take place.

Within 72 hours, CEO Amjad Masad announced a comprehensive security update to address the issues.

Automatic Development/Production Database Separation

The key change mandates separate databases for development and production, preventing AI-driven modifications from affecting live data. Replit will automatically migrate existing applications to this new architecture.

Enhanced Checkpoint and Rollback Systems

Replit has bolstered its checkpoint system, now including code, workspace content, AI context, and database states, with improved one-click restore and mandatory AI access to documentation to mitigate deception issues.

Chat/Planning-Only Mode Implementation
