OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT GO in India, a new subscription plan priced at ₹399 per month ($4.60), making it more affordable than the ₹1,999 ($23) per month Plus Plan. The company recently enabled local currency pricing for all plans and now offers UPI payment options. Nick Turley, OpenAI’s VP, stated that ChatGPT GO allows 10 times more messages, image generation, and file uploads than the free tier, along with better memory retention for personalized responses.
“Making ChatGPT more affordable has been a key request from users. We’re launching GO in India first and will learn from feedback before expanding elsewhere,” Turley said. Previously, the Plus plan cost over $20 in local currency for Indian users. The new GO plan aims to provide a cost-effective option for chatting, image creation, and file processing. Tibor Blaho had previously leaked this plan’s details.
While initially restricted to India, OpenAI plans to expand the GO plan to more regions. Last month, Turley mentioned ChatGPT’s 700 million weekly users worldwide, with increasing usage in India since the updated image generator launch. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted India’s position as the company’s second-largest market. AppFigures reports India leading in ChatGPT app downloads, though the app only generated $3.6 million in this period.
This pricing strategy aims to increase ChatGPT subscriptions in India. Other AI companies, such as Perplexity and Google, have also offered promotions targeting India’s large internet user base. While OpenAI isn’t offering free plans, its affordable pricing may drive better subscription rates in India.
