How to Ensure Instagram Isn’t Sharing Your Location with Friends

This week, Instagram introduced a new “map” feature allowing users to share their last active location with followers. Almost immediately, the internet reacted with concern. Many criticized the feature for its potential safety risks, while others cautioned that the feature might have been activated without their consent. Users reported unexpected notifications indicating their location was visible to others, even while asleep, creating an unfavorable situation for Instagram.

Instagram insists the feature is opt-in only. Without explicit permission, your location isn’t shared. Even if activated, it only shares with mutual friends, not all followers. Concerns arose over the ease of enabling the feature. Users could inadvertently share their location with minimal interaction. Also, confusion exists between the map’s live location sharing and tagged posts appearing on the map, suggesting a live presence when it isn’t.

Adam Mosseri of Instagram suggested users are misinterpreting tagged posts on the map as live location sharing. This misunderstanding is plausible, as many weren’t aware their geotagged posts would appear on the map before the feature’s existence.

The situation poses a PR challenge for Instagram, especially given Meta’s reputation regarding user privacy. Other platforms, like Snapchat’s Snap Map and Apple’s Find My, may have influenced Instagram’s move, yet user privacy concerns merit greater caution. Furthermore, the feature launch coincided with a jury ruling against Meta for violating privacy laws, highlighting a rather inopportune timing.

Instagram explains that the feature updates location when the app is opened and disappears after 24 hours of inactivity, with options for setting hidden locations. Despite this, users remain wary, viewing the feature as a privacy risk.

To manage this feature, check your settings: The Instagram map appears in your DMs. On tapping it, you can choose who sees your location—”Friends,” “Close Friends,” specific friends, or “No one.” If you haven’t opted in, it’s likely not enabled for you, but to be sure, select “No one” for added privacy. Disable location permissions for the app entirely through your device settings to prevent accidental sharing: On iOS, navigate to Settings > Apps > Instagram > Location, then select “Never.” On Android, go to Settings > Location > App location permissions, select Instagram, and choose “Don’t allow.”
