Google is working to catch up with Anthropic and OpenAI, gradually introducing customization, personalization, and greater data control to its Gemini app.
Personalization and data control in chat platforms enhance user interaction for both individuals and enterprises, particularly for ongoing projects where chatbots need to remember details such as branding or voice.
Google is taking a slower approach to releasing these features and does not allow users to edit or delete preferences, unlike its competitors.
Initially releasing to Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries, Google’s “Personal Context” will be a default setting, allowing it to “learn from your past conversations and provide relevant and tailored responses.” This feature will expand to 2.5 Flash soon.

In previous versions, users had to manually direct the model to past chats for preference sourcing. Personal Context can be disabled at any time.
Michael Siliski, senior director of Product Management for Gemini, stated that this rollout aims to enhance personalization.

Currently, Gemini apps can save chats for up to 72 hours with the save activity option off and can auto-delete data every three, 18, or 36 months.
Temporary chat and data control
New features include Temporary Chat and expanded data control.
Temporary Chat, also introduced on ChatGPT last year, allows users to have isolated conversations. These will not affect future interactions and won’t be used for personalization or AI model training.
Google also unveiled additional data controls. This feature is off by default but lets users prevent their data from being used in future Google model training.
“With this setting enabled, some future uploads will help improve Google services. You can disable this or use Temporary Chats. If Gemini Apps Activity is off, your
