Anthropic Challenges OpenAI and Google with New Claude AI Features for Students and Developers

Anthropic is introducing “learning modes” for its Claude AI assistant, transitioning the chatbot from a tool that provides answers to a companion that facilitates learning. This move aims to address concerns that AI may hinder genuine learning while tapping into the fast-growing AI education market.

The San Francisco-based AI startup will debut these features today for both its general Claude.ai service and specialized Claude Code programming tool. The learning modes signify a shift in how AI products are being adapted for educational use, focusing on guided exploration instead of immediate solutions, as educators worry about students becoming too reliant on AI-generated answers.

“We’re not building AI that replaces human capability—we’re building AI that enhances it thoughtfully for different users and use cases,” an Anthropic spokesperson told VentureBeat, sharing the company’s approach as the industry balances productivity gains with educational value.

The launch occurs amid a competitive surge in AI education tools. OpenAI introduced Study Mode for ChatGPT in late July, while Google released Guided Learning for its Gemini assistant in early August, committing $1 billion over three years to AI education initiatives. The timing, aligned with the back-to-school season, is critical for attracting student and institutional users.

The education technology market, valued at around $340 billion globally, presents a significant battlefield for AI companies keen to secure dominant positions as the technology evolves. Educational institutions offer not only immediate revenue potential but also the opportunity to shape how a generation interacts with AI tools, possibly creating lasting competitive advantages.

“This showcases how we think about building AI—combining our incredible shipping velocity with thoughtful intention that serves different types of users,” the Anthropic spokesperson noted, citing the company’s recent launches, including Claude Opus 4.1 and automated security reviews as evidence of its quick development pace.

For Claude.ai users, the new learning mode adopts a Socratic method, guiding users through challenging concepts with probing questions rather than quick answers. Initially launched in April for Claude for Education users, the feature is now accessible to all users via a simple dropdown menu.

In Claude Code, Anthropic has created two learning modes for software developers: “Explanatory” mode offers detailed narration of coding decisions, while “Learning” mode pauses mid-task, prompting developers to complete sections marked with “#TODO” comments for collaborative problem-solving.

This developer-focused approach responds to industry concerns about junior programmers who can generate code with AI tools but struggle with understanding or debugging it. “The reality is that junior developers using traditional AI coding tools can end up spending significant time reviewing and debugging code they didn’t write and sometimes don’t understand,” the Anthropic spokesperson explained.

The business rationale for adopting learning modes may seem counterintuitive, as companies might not want tools that intentionally slow their developers. However, Anthropic argues this reveals a more refined understanding of productivity that considers skill development alongside immediate outcomes.

“Our approach helps them learn as they work, building skills to grow in their careers while benefiting from productivity boosts of a coding agent,” the company stated. This challenges the industry trend toward fully autonomous AI agents, reflecting Anthropic’s commitment to a human-in-the-loop design.

Learning modes are driven by modified system prompts rather than fine-tuned models, allowing Anthropic to quickly iterate based on user feedback. The company has tested the tools internally with engineers of various skill levels and plans to monitor the impact as they become broadly available.

Simultaneous feature launches by Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google respond to concerns about AI’s educational impact. Critics argue that AI-generated answers may hinder the cognitive struggle essential for deep learning.

A recent WIRED analysis highlighted that while study modes are progress, they don’t fully address the challenge: “the onus remains on users to engage with the software in a specific way, ensuring that they truly understand the material.” The temptation to exit learning mode for quick answers remains a risk.

Educational institutions grapple with these trade-offs as they integrate AI into curricula. Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champlain College have partnered with Anthropic for campus-wide Claude access, while Google has secured partnerships with over 100 universities for its AI education initiatives.

Anthropic’s learning modes modify system prompts to exclude efficiency-focused instructions typically in Claude Code, directing the AI to identify educational insights and user interactions. This allows for rapid iteration but can lead to inconsistencies across conversations.

“We chose this approach because it lets us quickly learn from real student feedback and improve the experience, even if it results in some inconsistent behavior and mistakes across conversations,” the company explained. Future plans include embedding these learning behaviors directly into core models once optimal approaches are identified through user feedback.

The company is exploring enhanced visualizations for complex concepts, goal setting and progress tracking across conversations, and deeper personalization based on individual skill levels—features that could further differentiate Claude from competitors in the educational AI space.

As students return to classrooms with more sophisticated AI tools, the true test of learning modes will be whether they help maintain the intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills that algorithms can’t replicate. The
