ChatGPT Set to Achieve 700M Weekly Users, Says OpenAI

ChatGPT’s rapid growth as a consumer app continues, with expectations to reach 700 million weekly active users this week, according to the company.

Previously, the app had 500 million weekly active users by the end of March, stated Nick Turley, OpenAI VP and head of ChatGPT’s app, in a post on X. He mentioned that the app has grown fourfold since last year.

“Every day, people and teams are learning, creating, and tackling tougher challenges. Big week ahead. Thankful to the team for enhancing ChatGPT’s usefulness and fulfilling our mission for everyone to benefit from AI,” he posted.

The app’s popularity soared after OpenAI introduced an upgraded image generation feature using the GPT-4 model in March. In early April, the company’s COO, Brad Lightcap, revealed that over 130 million users had created more than 700 million images shortly after its launch.

The company has also witnessed a rise in subscribers. Last week, Lightcap reported that ChatGPT had 5 million paying business users, an increase from 3 million in June.

A recent report by market intelligence firm Sensor Tower observed that users engage with ChatGPT for over 12 days a month on average, second only to Google and X. The report further highlighted that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes daily on the app.
