Meta Collaborates with Midjourney on AI Image and Video Models

Meta is collaborating with Midjourney to leverage the startup’s AI image and video generation technology as announced by Meta’s Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. This partnership aims to integrate Midjourney’s technology into Meta’s future AI models and products.

Wang stated that delivering optimal products requires a comprehensive approach, involving top talent, a strong compute roadmap, and partnerships with industry leaders.

The collaboration could position Meta to compete with leading AI image and video models like OpenAI’s Sora and Google’s Veo. Meta previously integrated its AI image tool, Imagine, into platforms like Facebook and Instagram, and offers a video generation tool named Movie Gen for creating videos from prompts.

The licensing deal with Midjourney represents Meta’s latest strategy to advance in the AI field, following a hiring spree for AI talent and significant investments, including $14 billion in Scale AI and the acquisition of Play AI.

Discussions with other AI labs continue, though Meta did not join Elon Musk’s takeover bid for OpenAI.

Details of Meta’s agreement with Midjourney remain undisclosed. Midjourney’s CEO, David Holz, emphasized the company’s independence in a post. Meta previously considered acquiring Midjourney.

Founded in 2022, Midjourney has achieved notable success in AI image generation and projects $200 million in revenue. The company offers subscriptions ranging from $10 to $120 per month, and launched its first AI video model, V1, in June.

The partnership follows Midjourney’s recent lawsuit by Disney and Universal over AI-related copyright infringement, similar to allegations faced by other AI developers, including Meta, though recent legal outcomes have favored tech companies.
