OpenAI has launched its new flagship model, GPT-5, announcing that it will now power ChatGPT exclusively, phasing out the current models.
A spokesperson from OpenAI informed VentureBeat that GPT-5 will become the sole model for ChatGPT, eliminating the need to choose between models like GPT-4o, o3, o4-mini, or o4-mini-high.
Access to GPT-5 is being introduced for ChatGPT Plus, Free, Pro, and Team users, while Enterprise and Edu users will retain access to the “legacy” models for another 60 days.
This move surprised many ChatGPT users who were accustomed to their preferred models. The transition may require users to adjust since workflows were often based on the interaction style or typical response times of certain models.

Some users reported forming a “connection” with their model of choice, while a demo during the livestream showing GPT-4o writing its own eulogy was seen as inappropriate. Many users are particularly affected by the loss of GPT-4o, which was the default model they relied on.
The switch to the reasoning model was initially annoying for some, but they’ve come to appreciate it for work-related queries while still turning to 4o for faster tasks like travel planning or gift suggestions.
OpenAI had previously faced criticism over the number of model choices, leading CEO Sam Altman to acknowledge in February that the model picker was complicated and promised to simplify their product line. The GPT-5 integration seems a step toward that goal.
