OpenAI Unveils GPT-5, Nano, Mini, and Pro: Software-on-Demand Without AGI

After years of anticipation, OpenAI has unveiled new large language models (LLMs), variants of the anticipated GPT-5, succeeding the GPT-4 model from March 2023.

OpenAI introduces GPT-5, GPT-5 Mini, GPT-5 Nano, and GPT-5 Pro, addressing different requirements for speed, cost, and computational depth.

GPT-5 will soon be the exclusive model for ChatGPT, replacing existing models for its 700 million weekly users. ChatGPT Pro subscribers ($200/month) may choose older models for the next 60 days.

Rumors suggest OpenAI replaced manual model selection with an automated router that engages “GPT-5 thinking” mode for complex queries, using regular GPT-5 or mini models for simpler tasks.

In the API, the models — GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, and GPT-5 nano — are available as gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano. GPT-5 Pro is exclusive to ChatGPT Pro subscriptions.

GPT-5’s release follows the launch of free open-source LLMs named GPT-oss that can be downloaded and used offline.

The noteworthy aspect is not what GPT-5 is, but what it’s not: AGI, artificial general intelligence, OpenAI’s goal of AI surpassing human capabilities in valuable work.

Whether AGI is a realistic goal is debatable, but OpenAI achieving AGI would impact its business operations. Wired highlighted a clause in OpenAI’s contract with Microsoft allowing OpenAI to charge Microsoft if AGI is achieved or $100 billion in profit is generated.

But that’s not the situation today. As co-founder and CEO Sam Altman explained, “while defining AGI, we realize we’re missing some vital elements — including a model that learns continuously. GPT-5 isn’t it.”

I asked OpenAI: “Is OpenAI considering GPT-5 AGI? How will it impact Microsoft negotiations?”

An OpenAI spokesperson replied:

GPT-5 represents a significant step towards AGI with improvements in reasoning and generalization. However, AGI is not well-defined, and while GPT-5 meets some AGI criteria, it lacks the capabilities of full AGI. Perceptions vary, and key limitations remain in memory, autonomy
